Archery

For Isaac this was the ultimate. Last year he wanted to do it so badly, but we discovered it after we'd already spent our miserly amount allotted for the day. His desire was not at all diminished by a year of waiting! For me, these are absolutely my current favorite pictures of him. I love how the light is coming across them and lighting up his hair. I also love the focus and intent in his eyes, and you can actually see the tunic I made.
As many of you know, we have recently made some positive financial changes which mean we are using our money more effectively and carefully. That means we have to say "no" to a lot of stuff we used to say "yes" to. But we are also able to save for special occasions like the Renaissance Festival where we get to say "yes" to most everything. I like our new way so much better!

Bungee Fun!

This is the only ride I debated getting on myself, it just looked like SOOO much fun! But I resisted, knowing the less I spent on myself the more fun for Isaac (don't be fooled, I had lots of yummy food to keep me content). It was also lots of fun to watch everyone else on the ride, doing flips, etc. Isaac tried to do a flip and kind of came down bent in half, which he didn't really like, but overall it left him loving the ride.
I'm sure he'll be riding it every year from now on! By the way, you have to be over 30 lbs and under 180 lbs to ride, so they have a scale and Isaac weighs 50 lbs! He's also about 46.5 inches tall. Boy do they ever grow fast.

Climb On!

When you are climbing, the belayer says "climb on," when they are ready for you to start climbing. The climber then says "climbing," when they are getting on the rock/wall. Once Isaac took off his roper boots he was ready to climb. Like last year, he climbed up to the top without much of a hitch. Here was one glitch getting a foot up onto the large hold his right foot is on in this shot. His left hand couldn't reach the next hold but the large hold was too high for him to get a foot on. After repeatedly trying to reach the next hold with his left hand and trying to get his right foot up on the hold, he finally put his right knee on the hold, grabbed the hold with his left hand and pulled himself up! Rock on, Isaac! Never once did he start to give up, it wasn't a matter of if he'd make it to the top, just a matter of how he would get to the top.

Crystal Sticks AKA Juggling Sticks

One of Paul's hidden talents, crystal sticks. Who knew! It's one of those things he learned how to do years ago and can still do. While Paul had his 5 minutes of fun I had to keep reminding Isaac that everything we had done so far was for him and to just let daddy have a few minutes to have fun playing with the juggling sticks.

Jacob's Ladder

I was amazed by how much Isaac remembered of what games and rides there were at the Renaissance Festival. Jacob's Ladder was one that Isaac distinctly remembered and wanted to try. If you follow the pictures down you'll see the typical progression of what happens when people try Jacob's Ladder. The goal is to use only your hands and feet to climb this ladder that goes to one rope at each end.
Sounds so simple, and the worker at the booth demonstrated over and over how to do it. But at the end of the day when we went by again so Paul could give it a try, I asked the guy if anyone had done it all day. He told me that no one had. Needless to say, neither Isaac nor Paul were successful. But if Paul had more than three tries he may have done it.
Luckily, as you can see from the pictures, Isaac didn't mind falling in the hay. Our parental concerns that he'd be bummed that he couldn't do it were put to rest quickly by the huge smile on his face. Love it!

Renaissance Festival 2008

Considering how much Isaac enjoys costumes and knights, going to the Renaissance Festival is almost a must. We went last year, but didn't have much money to use while we were there. This year, we planned for it and had plenty of money so we could be "yes parents." Isaac already had a great assortment of costumes to select from, but I made a purple tunic for him to wear with other stuff he already had. This photograph shows Isaac riding the joust ride.
